Technology

We are in the 21st century and the things are very different that 100 years ago.
Nowadays technology is everywhere, and you can't run away from it. You can't leave your house and expect not to see a piece of technology; in fact, even if you stay at home you'll be surrounded by it. Clothes, phones, eyeglasses, forniture, computers, nail polish and the list still goes on and on and on and on. An as we can't escape from it, we can't live without techonolgy. Even brushing your teeth is a technological procedure. And, of course, the health area isn't immune to this phenomenon, in contrast, it is the biggest inspiration of technology.
Technology in Health has made possible to diagnose in less time, treat in a more efficient way, control the patient and find - or at least try to- cures for diseases of the world.

Picture a 'doctor' in the 1700's. A patient with a chest pain arrives. The only way the medic has to hear what's happening on the inside of the patient is to put his ear directly on the patient's torax and hope -for the person's sake- that his hearing is accurate. A hundred years later, a french guy invents the stethoscope 'cause he was embarrased of the aforementioned method. A simple tool to diagnose and control better, faster and more precisely. Both the patient and the medic wins. But it was a snowball. One thing led to another and now we have a lot of instruments and machinery to make the health professional a more efficient one.

Technology also made possible to find what a microorganisms are like and how to beat them. Vaccines, tablets, capsules, syrups, etc. All of them have appeared and have been improved over all of this years, nearly as the same rates as the microorganisms evolve to new strains.

As to what our career is concerned, technology has improved the way we treat our patients and as we help them to recover to a nearly full movement status when it is possible. Take as an example the Locomat machine that Ripley donated to Teletón in 2007 to help people to feel their limbs and learn how to walk again. This is a good example of how technology is intended in health area.

All of the above are very good reasons to respond why we can't live without technology in our lives. It doesn't matter if your are a student, a medic, a truck driver or even a bum. We have technology in all your aspects of life and from the beginning 'till the end of it. We can never ever try to part from it, you cand try as hard as you can, but eventually it will find and help you.
All we can do is thank the men and women that have helped in many ways to make our lives easier and better.

Challenges of my career

Today I'm going to write about the challenges of my career: Physical Therapy.
Physical therapy is one of the most required careers in the area of Health. Despite this, in Chile we have a lot of problems in the areas of technology, Education and social matters(related with the two previous topics ).

In Chile we don't have the necessary technology for a good and more effective treatment for the patient. In the universities this technology is almost inexistent because electronic equipment is so expensive that a few universities can afford it. Further, the few universities that can pay for it don't have the necessary equipment available for each student. This is a big problem for students because not everyone have access to the equipment and that can make studying or learning-by-doing a lot more difficult for some.

Another problem related with tecnology is that in hospitals, "SAPU" and consults don't exist the same equipment that in clinics. This is a problem and an injustice for the patients and the physical therapist, because obviously in clinics the treatment is more effective, faster and the Physical therapist have all the necessary equipment for this. All this boils down to money ; hospitals have a low budget and the persons that came here don't have a lot of money and in contrast, clinics have hight budget and people that came here does have money. As we can see, all this can resume in an issue of difference between social classes, which, I hope, will end as soon as a good health plan comes out by the government, We'll see if the new president presents an improved plan next year (not just campaign's promises but the real deal).

Another challenge my career faces these days is the fact that a lot - really, A LOT- of people doesn't have a clear mind of what it is about. I mean, they think that our career is just about giving massages and stuff like that; not much realize that we treat serious injuries and that we are the cause of nearly full (if not full) movement recovery on patients whom have been diagnosed with paralysis in some degree. But, on the other side, social campaigns such as Teletón, have made that a lot of them also be a little more educated about what we do and how we help people. And that's a start.

Improving my Faculty

My faculty is actually kind of archaic. I see it like a big school building, since I know other universities, like the San Joaquin's campus of the UC, or the USACH campus, which are really, really big and have a lot of green areas and places to rest between classes.

I also think that the classrooms are quite old, and have a lousy acoustic, 'cause sometimes you can't hear what the teachers are saying right. And the bathrooms are ugly and kind of old too.

I really think that a lot of things need improvement, like the ones aforementioned - the bathrooms, the classrooms and the lack of green areas - but some more need some improvement too: the computers must be upgraded or be totally renewed, and enlarge the number of them, 'cause right now, they're not enough for all of the students. Same thing with books, they're not enough for all of us, they should get new copies.

If they do some improvements in those areas, the whole community will be benefited, as more students will be able to study without worries (as more books will be available and the waiting time will be reduced) and to check classes' powerpoints, investigate and read the things they need for their subjects in the new computers.

The one thing that is actually a little harder to achieve is the green areas, as there's necessary a bigger terrain, and, as far as I know, there's no adjacent ground to be bought by the university to make a park-like patio for the students to relax, but, dreaming is free and free almost everytime is good.

My hobbies

Write about my hobbies is quite dificult to me, because I like to do a lot of things in my free time( when I have it, because with the studies I almost don't have free time).I like to watch movies, I love to go to the cinema; I like to see Tv series( this is my favourite hobbie) , I like to cook( especially if they are cakes and sweets)and I like to dance a lot.

I love to watch TV series, because when I watch it I feel relaxed, I laugh a lot and I forget my problems and my daily university routine.I started watching these series about 2 years, because a friend wanted to watch Prison break and we gathered to watch this series.

When I stay with my boyfriend we see " How I met your mother" an American TV series that is so great and you reflex yourself in it. We also watch "Cougar Town" , Lie to me, Prison Break. But my favourite is How I met you mother, because it is so funny !

In "How I met your mother" you can see the life that five friends have in New York, the main characters are: Ted Mosby, Robin( friend and ex-girlfriend of Ted), Marshal Eriksen, Lili ( Marshal's wife) and Barney, a womanizer with an obsession for looking good and well dressed. The reason of the title is that Ted tells to his children how he met his mom but (this it funny) in 5 season he never has said the name of his wife and he always talks about everything (problems with his friends, his first girlfriend, his first kiss, ect) and never about his wife.

Another activity that I like to do is go to the cinema , because I think that watching movies there is more exciting than watch them in my house. I often go to the movie theater with my boyfriend because he shares with me this taste for the movies. I love the movies that are romantic, I always cry with them but I also love the funny movies, those movies that make you laugh all the time. The one movie that is my favourite is "Pride and Prejudice", a peculiar love history set in old age.

In resume, I 'm a lover of the seventh art and I hope to remain that way for a long time...

"My holidays"

In the summer I like going out of santiago, because here it's so hot and you can't go out without finishing all transpired. I like going out to the beach, to the lake, to the mointain but my favourite place in Chile is the South, I love going to Conguillio.I wanna go to another countries, for example, I want to go to Australia, Punta Cana, Hawai( there beaches are great); Italy( I love the italian food), Spain, etc.

About the places that I have visited with my family , we go to Comquimbo almost every year, this place is so beautifull and you can find a lot of beaches, good food (the seafood are great), a lot of enterteinment( you can go to "ferias artesanales", good pubs, restaurants, etc). The Beach that I love is "Totoralillo", here the sea is calypso and the sand is so white that you can reflex yourself in it ,like a mirrow.

The place that I think that is the best place in Chile is Conguillio( a wonderfull place in the south of Chile), because here I have a great time with my friend, you can camp and share with nature. This is a beutifull national reserve, where you can see the most amazing nature, this place has plenty of araucarias(a tree in risk of extinction).

For my next holidays, I want to go to Coihueco( I don't know where it is, but my friends want to go because they say that is very beutifull). I 'll go with my University friends and we decide go here because is beautifull, little, cheap, quiet place and Tamara, our friend, has a big hut here( this is the real reason why we all want to go here, because in this place we don't have to pay rent ).
To this trip I will go with: Tamara(obviusly), Andres, Daniela,Nimsi and Jame. We want to invite other friends if they want to go with us and make a big group of friends. We want to visit the town, go to the beach, eat a lot , see a lot of movies, drink and make parties every night.

We all hope that this trip becomes reality and have a great time there.

Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow can be very painful. It surely can alter the way you use your arm, making it almost unusable because of the pain.

It is caused by damage on your tendoms that connects your arm muscles to the bone of your elbow.
You can cause damage by doing activities that strain your elbow, such as playing tennis (hence the name), using a screwdriver or raking leaves. It can be an accident, but it often happens over time.

Symptoms are a little bit obvious: Pain in the elbow, especially when you twist your arm or you're holding stuff. But the pain isn't just local, you can feel it on the lower arm, your shoulder or even your hand.

You're more likely to have Tennis Elbow in the arm you use the most. It isn't weird if pain comes and goes, 'cause it depends on how much you use your elbow. But if pain doesn't stop a few days later, or if your arm is red, swollen and/or tempered, you should go see a doctor as soon as you can.

Luckily, Tennis Elbow gets better by itself. Just try not to force your arm (pay attention to the pain) or do repetitive movements.

Some people use Ice Packs to ease the pain, and some use support or braces, to stop the elbow to do some moves.

If we start talking about painkillers, Ibuprofen is the most common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) - they come as gel, tablets or creams -, it is known for helping Tennis Elbow in the short term, but there aren't studies about how they help in the long term.
You just try not to take them for long periods of time, 'cause they can have side effects, such as itching (for gel NSAIDs) or diarrhea (tablets) as mild effects, but it can get worst: your risk of having a heart attack increases on high doses for long time.

Studies say that steroids can be real effective against Tennis Elbow, but eventually the shot will wear off after a few months, and it may cause flushed face (like when you're embarrased...but a little more permanent) or you may feel pain where the needle entered on your arm.

To prevent having Tennis Elbow again, you need to strenghten your forearm muscles by doing exercises. If you want to, ask a physiotherapist for advice. You just need to do excercises for eight weeks to help reduce the pain, studies have said.

You can try acupuncture and, on really critical cases, surgery, but none of them have studies on how reliable they are.

My Guide of Santiago

The city of Santiago, Chile represents a distinct blend of diversity. Everywhere you turn you’ll be faced with beautiful buildings, fun restaurants and cafes, and astounding collections of artwork.

There are tons of sights and attractions to keep visitors to Santiago occupied. If you’re visiting for the first time you’ll probably have a difficult time determining where to start. If this is the case, check out some of these attractions first.
In Santiago you can visit a several places where you can know much of our history and culture. It has: the "Bellas Artes" musseum, The national historical musseum, Plaza de Armas, Cousiño palace, " La Moneda", La Cjascona, etc; this places are so beautiful because they are national monuments.

You have to climb the "Santa Lucia" Hill. From the top of this hill you can see the entire city of Santiago as well as the beautiful Andes. The hill is littered with walking paths, beautiful gardens, statues, and even a small art museum.San Cristobal Hill, accessible via the aerial tram, is also a great place to stop if you’d like to enjoy some of the area’s astounding scenery. This hill is home to the Metropolitan Zoo, a myriad of gardens, and two gorgeous natural swimming pools, they are gret but a little bit expensive. You can go to Snow in Mountain range of Andes, this is a very turistic place of Santiago and exist a variety of places that they have it: La Parva, El Colorado , Farellones for example. Here you can do snowboard , sky and if you love the snow, you can stay here in the best and the most comfortable hotels.

If you don't want to cook and you need go out ,in Santiago we have many restorants and places of fast food.My favourite place is "El Rincón del Inca", this is a restorant in Bellavista where you can eat Peruvian and Italian food; Here the food is delicious and the attention is the best!. The Barrio Bellavista is a very good place to go if you want to go to restorants, pubs, discoteques because, here you can find a variety of this places, and if you are young and want to have fun all night this is the place to have it.

And finally if you want to go out of center and go to the surroundings of Santiago, you have to go to El cajón del Maipo, where you can find rivers, fields , a beutiful nature; you have to go to Pomaire and go to the restorants and buy things of "greda", they are native of Chile.

The music in my life

Music is very important in my life , I think that everything in this life has music, we listen to music everywhere but we do not realize that because this is something so natural to us.

I think that listening to music relaxes me , because when I feel bad or I have to study, I listen to music to lift myself up or concentrate. When I stay with my friends we always put some music on the radio because we sing together and we listen to the music.
Now, for my studies,I hear less and less music because I have trouble with my concentrating, not like before because now I have to study so much.Music to me in this moment is something that I can live with out it, is only an accompanymen to me.
The music that I hear is very different :I hear Coldplay, that is kind of pop music but is very calm, this group is from England.I like Iron Maiden, Metallica,Mago de Oz......those are METAL bands, and this kind of music is very energetic and cool; I like The Beatles, Nirvana, Belanova...those are pop bands to...and many many types of groups!!

When I go to the parties I like to hear or dance "Merengue" and "Salsa" because I think that this music is very contagius and when you listen it you feel that your feet move instantly. This music is from central America ,and for that I think that it is so contagius, sensual .

I download this music from internet with ARES, because I think that the CD's are to expensive and If we can downloading the music in the web and don't pay anything for this is more convenient than buy it ; I know that this is very inconsiderate of my part but I don't care.

My favourite place...

The country that I want to go in the future is Australia, because I think that this country is so beautiful and you can find so much variety of scenary, you can find a modern and cosmopolitan city full of urban malls, fine pubs and hotels to the exotic and majestic natural beauty of its valleys, flora and fauna unique in the region. In Australia live Koalas and Kangoroos, and I love these animals, because I think they are unique and so sweet.

I want to go to this country with my friends, we have a plan that we must go before I'm 30 years old, because we want to live and work here, because I think that the oppotunities to work in Australia are good. Obviously, I want to go to work there with a labour exchange program, with this I can work a few years there (with all the comfort: salary and house) and later I have to go back to work in my country.
I want to know Sidney, and go to a lot of beaches that you can find there, but I want to know one that I think is fabolous:
Whale beach is so beautifull, you can find a lot of tropical coral , and see beautiful tropical fishes. The sand in this place is so white that you can reflect on it and the sea is calypso, and it is my favourite colour!

For this and so much...I want to go there and have a great time!

My first term in University

Last term was very dificult for me, because the change was huge. University is very different than school. Here you have more classes, more subject-matters, you have to read more and integrate more; here the exigency is bigger than school .First I didn't know how to study , because before I studied the day before the test and i had good marks, but in the university you have to study many days before your test.
About the subjects that I had in the last semester (I passed everything!), I enjoy very much the course about Histology and Embriology, because I didn't know anything about this and it's very interesting to learn more about our tissues and the human body. The other subject that I enjoyed the most was my CFG "Ballroom dancing" , because this was my only distraction of my studies.

Here in my University I knew very special people, I made good friends easily, because the people are so charismatic and friendly that you can speak hours with them and you can feel like you are with your best friend forever.

This year I have felt a little bit depressive, I think that this felling is because of the pressure that we have for all the subjects that we have to pass. For example, I feel that "Anatomy , Neuroanatomy...."(KEF--a integrative course) are so hard but at the same time, I like it, and sometimes I think that my study and effort is not enough because in this subject I have my worse notes. But in this semester I will try to spend more time on this subject and try to not feel this anguish when I have to study this.

Do schools kill creativity?

Today I'm going to write about the conference of Sir Ken Robinson, where he talked about the mistakes that we are experimenting in our traditional education system, because we are suppressing the creativity and the expression of our children, because schools are centered more on mathematics, and sciences than in Arts, a very important part of the human being to develop his creativity. He said that all kids have a tremendous talent but we waste it, and the creativity is as important in educacion as literacy and we must treat it with equal importance.

I think that all that he speaked is absolutely truth, because now the school leave outside the development of arts and creativity to teach us absolutely structured things, which they "say" (they put that ideas in our minds) that will serve us much more in the future, preventing us to develop our creative side (a secret place in our mind that is anxious to go out into the light) that perhaps is our vocation that is being repressed by the system, because as they say: "If you're an artist, musician, dancer you will never have the oportunity to carry out your capabilities completely, because now do not exist sufficient opportunities to obtain money and work " . And that is a big failure in our labour and educational system, but now there are more spaces for the development of our creative capabilities although like hobbies.

My blog!!!!

Writing this blog has not been a very enriching experience for me as I had thought, because I think that writting this didn't help me very much in improve my English, because I think that I write a little better than before but that it's not what I wanted when I started writting this blog.

I think that sometimes I enjoy to write some texts(blogs) but others were so boring ( for example when we had to write about the best in our area...) that I didn't enjoy these , because I didn't know what to write because the themes were so uninspired for me .The blog that I enjoyed the most is the blog where we had to describe one picture, and I wrote about my prom;I liked writting this one because I could remember that fantastic day and I could share it with my classmates.

I think that this idea( writting blogs) is a good idea, but sometimes we didn't have much time to write and we didn't finish it in class, so we had to write in our house and loose part of our "free" time(that really is not as free as you may think, because we use that time to study, because we don´t have a life). But, as I said before, I think that this idea is good, because we can write in english by ourselves to start realizing what our mistakes were and we can correct them step by step. However, I think that this method has some disadvantages (apart from the time) : I had to write alone so I didn't know that if what I was writing was correct or not, if grammar was flawed, etc; I didn't had help in this and I'm so insecure that I think that all my writings are wrong.

My ideal job

My ideal job would be working with children, because I like the energy that they transmit, I like their angelical way of thinking. I want to work outside, not inside an office all day (that's why I chose this career), for that I think that hippotherapy or Hydroterapy.

I believe that when you work with children you must have a lot of patience and dedication, to try to be as loving as possible, be comprehensive and explain things in an easy way.

I would like to have a lot with some horses and a swimming pool,so I could hire physical therapists and we could take care of patients.I think that is necesary that in the lot exists the necessary equipment for Hydrotherapy( like hot tub, water with special minerals in it, etc) and for hippotherapy ( horses).
Obviously, for hippotherapy I would have to learn how to ride a horse.

I think that I would be good for this job because I really love children, swimming and horses, and having these three things together would be great!.
I know that it would be difficult to have all this as soon as I graduate, but I'll work hard to earn the money I need to buy the parcel, the horses. the pools, hot tubs and everything that I'll need ti make my rehab center for children.
Earning the bucks to buy all the stuff is going to be the most difficult part of it, since I'm going to be my own boss and, of course, I'll contract myself immediately.

My favourite subject

My favourite subject is "understanding of the structure of tissues", because I can understand how the cells in my tissues interact, what cells are in my body and which is their role in the tissue. In this class I can learn: Histology, Embryology and Organology.
This course is integrated, for that we can't have only one teacher , we have minimun 3 teachers, but the person in charge of this subject is: Ulrike Kemmerling; but for each of this three little subject in the biggest one are teachers in charge . For example in Embriology, the person in charge is the teacher Susana Dominguez.
I like this subject because is very interesting know how the tissues are made and the characteristics of each of them. I can also learn how is the develoment of the zigote up to become in a baby, that is the class I enjoyed and liked the most, because I love babies.
The last thing we are seeing( organology) is very difficult, because it integrates the two previous units , but it is very entertaining to see how everything is so related.
I have learned in this semester how we are constituted: the muscle, blood, the nervous system, bone and cartilage, etc. I also learned the stages of embryo development.

The best in my area

I think that the best in my area is my teacher Rodolfo Sanzana, because he is very dedicated in his class and I always understand everything that he said.
I don't know how is he as a professional (how he is as a physical therapist) because I don't know if he exercises as a physical therapist.
I chose him because I think that theaching is a very good option to my future and a profesional of my area can do both things: being a teacher and working as a pysical therapist.
I really like his work because I think that teaching Anatomy is very difficult , and in his classes I can see that he loves the anatomy, he loves the human body and he transmitted his thoughts to us. The other thing that I can see in his class is that he knows a lot of anatomy.
Here are some classes that he uploaded to the "u-cursos" website:
https://www.u-cursos.cl/medicina/2008/0/KINANHIEM1/1/material_docente/

My Future

In five years I hope to be a professional, a really good physical therapist.I imagine that I will be working on a clinic or on a hospital ,attending patient and making their lives better.
I hope been working with handicapped children and I really want to be a good phisycal therapist!

I think that I will be working to save my money and thanks to that have a better life in the future, because money in this time is very important( unfortunately) and we always have to have a little reserve.

Personally, in this years I'm going to be single because I don't want to get married too young, but I see in this future a boyfriend, who cares about me and loves me . I hope that my family will be united like now and I now that in my 23 years I will be staying with my parents in my house because in this years I think that I'm going to have a little amount of money .

My ideal future is very simple, I want to have a beautiful family : two childrens (hopefully a boy and a girl) and one husband (only one hahahaha).I want to have a big house with a pool and I always wanted a hot tub because I think they are great.
I hope that in the future my parents are alive and they meet my children...and play with them and take care of them.
I really want to be a very good person and have a lot of money(XD).....

My career

I'm studying Physical therapy because I want to work with handicapped and disabled people, specially with childrens. I want to contribute in their treatment and their rehab.

I like physical therapy becuase in this job you can talk with your patient and you can have a "relationship" with him , he can trust in you , talk with you, etc....You always must to be in contact with your patient and you must know everything about him.

Physical therapists are contributed in many ways to our society. They can contribute in a lot of areas :They can help handicapped and disabled people, take part in group of scientific investigation, they can help people with breathing problems, etc. Also they can work with another professionals and make helps groups .
The role of physical therapist is to try to recover the movement in the patient, for this they make a lot of exercises to the patient .

My favourite subject is Embriology, because this subject is about the develoment of the baby, and is so magical to know how the zygote grows to become a neonate.

My prom photo with my awesome boyfriend

This picture was taken on December 21th, 2008, by us (my boyfriend and me) with the timer function of the camera at my prom. It was very late (3.24 am).

I like this picture because it kind of takes me back in the time, when I was a happy (not that I'm not happy now, just I'm a little tired) school girl and my future was just beginning to take the form it actually has.

It also reminds me of the prom itself. It was a very, VERY good party. I had the time of my life on that party, with my close friends, the ones that weren't that close, my parents and my awesome boyfriend (in the picture, suited-up). We stayed there dancing and having fun until there was sun light at 7.00 am. I drank, talked about a lot of things - some serious and some just stupid - and wore a mask, a funny hat and a plastic tie that doesn't appear on the photograph because I've already taken them off.

In this picture I'm wearing my beatiful long calypso prom dress (it was meant to be purple, but I didn't find the fabrics, so I bought the calypso one, my second favourite colour). It was handmade by a dressmaker, but it was a totally original desing by me.

To resume, it was a great party and this picture reminds me how good it was and is a memory I'm going to remember for the rest of my mortal life, or until I get Alzheimer and forgot all about it and everything else.

Physical Therapy website

I don't have a favourite web site, because in the last time I don't have much time to be in the ciberspace. However, the last month I found an interesting website about my career, this web is a blog where you can find a lot of INFORMATION related with physical therapy.
This web site is very useful when I want some information about my career. Also in this web I can find books and download them. The other day I downloaded the " Netter" , a book about anatomy and it was very slow, but finally I got it.

I found this website because one person of my class provided a link in our email(kineuchile2009@gmail.com) and I clicked it and I found this page.

I used to visit this website once or twice a week, but since I don't use as much internet as I did before, the 'surfing-on-the-net' rate has been falling down.

The main reason that I like this website is because I can download the books that are very important in my career (yeah, I know that I'm doing illegal stuff, but I don't have money to buy those expensive books). Secondary reasons that make it a very good website are: it has notes, links to other related sites and blogs, it has news about coming physical therapy conferences or lectures, and it is constantly being updated with new things.
The link to the website I've been writing about is: http://kinetres.blogspot.com/
Bye!

My Samsung TV

My favourite piece of tecnology is my TV (with cable on it)

It is a big plastic and glass box with buttons on it where I can watch shows from all over the world.

I got it like 4 years ago, because the one I had before exploded when I turned it on. It was the saddest day of my life, luckily from me, my dad bought the new one as soon as he could.

I use it to watch different kinds of shows, like drama, comedy and sci-fi series or movies. I turn it on using the remote control and press the buttons when I want to change the channel or raise the volume. When I'm done watching it, I turn it off using the remote again.

I used to use it A LOT when I was on school and on vacations, but now I have less time to watch it, because I don't have much time. I study almost all day long; the only show I can watch is the soap opera "Cuenta Conmigo" when I'm having tea.

I like my TV because it entertains me. It has cooking shows, comedy series, drama series, movies, gossip, etc. And it is the object that helps me to relax when I'm tired or stressed.

I realized that my life without TV would be pretty much as equal as now, since I don't watch it so often now. But if it is removed entirely out of my life, it would be a little more boring than it is now. I'm used to watch at least 10 minutes of TV a day, so it is kind of an important part of my life. I can't imagine how life would be without it.

email
